Foreword

Whether you're a beginner or an old-timer a worm-dunker, plug-tosser or a dry-fly puritan this book will tell you many things you'll want to know to get the most out of your fishing. And it will do it in plain fish-talk so you can't miss.

For example, it will tell you about the most popular kinds of freshwater and dock-side game fish, where to find them and how to catch them. I don't mean how to catch them only when they're biting. You'll see that this is no trick once you know their favorite chow and how to offer it to them on the right hook or lure without making them suspicious. You will learn how to catch these fish when they aren't biting (which will probably seem to be most of the time). Much of this is angling savvy that seldom gets into print because the old backwoodsmen and guides and salt-water professionals prefer to keep it to themselves.

Here you will also learn about the different ways you can go fishin', the various methods and tackle, so you won't have to confine your fun to just one kind. You'll be able to try them all.

The first two sections of the book tell you about the most popular fresh- and salt-water fish and how to fool them. Then you will learn about the various fishing methods—fly-casting, bait-casting, spinning and so forth. You can use more than one method for the kind of fish you are going after, of course. The choice is up to you, but you will find that varying your methods provides the most fun—and the most fish. The last section covers the different kinds of bait. If you come across a word or term that is unfamiliar, check the glossary.

But even when you don't catch fish, goin' fishin' is fun. Being out on a stream or pond or bay with a rod and reel, knowing that somewhere under the surface a big "lunker" may be lurking, waiting just for you, makes your pulse pound and gives you a thrill nothing else can. If you don't catch him, so what ? You might the next time.
